Iran publicly hangs murder convict
Dubai, Aug 26: Authorities in central Iran on Monday publicly hanged a man who was convicted in the shooting death of a lawyer, the country’s official judicial news agency said. The man, who was not identified, had been convicted of fatally shooting the lawyer with a hunting rifle in front of his wife and son in the city of Shahroud in August 2021, the Mizan.new agency said. It was the first public hanging of the year in Iran, according to the Oslo-based Iran Human Rights, which tracks executions in the country. The group’s director, Mahmoud Amiri Moghaddam, urged the international community to condemn such public executions. (AP)
Ice cave collapse leaves one dead
Helsinki, Aug 26: The collapse of an ice cave Sunday in southeast Iceland’s Vatnajokull National Park has left one tourist dead and two others missing, local media reported. The ice wall collapsed when a tour group of 25 people visited the cave. Four individuals remained behind and were buried by the ice. Rescuers were able to recover two of them, one of whom was deceased. The other rescued person is in stable condition in hospital, according to Icelandic radio RUV. (IANS)
WHO launches plan to stanch spread of mpox
Geneva, Aug 26: The UN health agency on Monday launched a six-month plan to help stanch outbreaks of mpox transmission, including ramping up staffing in affected countries and boosting surveillance, prevention and response strategies. The World Health Organisation said it expects the plan from September through February next year will require USD 135 million in funding and aims to improve fair access to vaccines, notably in African countries hardest hit by the outbreak. Underworld figure ‘angel of death’ gunned down
Lusaka, Aug 26: The New South Wales (NSW) Police on Monday identified Tarek Ayoub, a 29-year-old underworld figure nicknamed ‘angel of death’, as the victim of a fatal shooting in Sydney. The police said that more than one gunman are on the run after a man with ‘links to organised crime’ was shot dead in Sydney on Monday, it was reported. NSW Police Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said Ayoub was visiting an associate when he was killed in an “execution-style” targeted attack carried out by more than one gunman. Doherty said that Ayoub was a well-known organised crime identity with a long history of violence. (IANS)
Indian Navy’s warship visit SL
Colombo, Aug 26: The Indian Naval Ship ‘Mumbai’ docked at the port of Colombo on Monday on a three-day visit to Sri Lanka during which it will also engage in a Passage Exercise with a Sri Lanka Navy vessel. The Indian Navy’s frontline warship was welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy in compliance with naval traditions, the island nation’s navy said in a press release. INS Mumbai, a 163-metre-long Destroyer, is manned by a crew of 410 members. (PTI)
