SHILLONG, Aug 28: The state government is examining suggestions to create a new district within East Khasi Hills district with its headquarters based at Sohra.
“The government is thinking over the creation of a civil sub-division or even a district. The main intention is to take administration closer to people,” said Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong in the Assembly during question hour on Wednesday.
Trinamool Congress leader Charles Pyngrope had suggested the state government to consider coming up with a new district within East Khasi Hills district to take administration closer to people.
He cited that the East Khasi Hills district is the largest in the state and therefore, there is a need for the creation of a new district within it.
Earlier, United Democratic Party’s Mawsynram MLA Olan Singh Suin had asked the government whether the long-pending demand for the creation of a new civil sub-division at Mawsynram Community and Rural Development Block will be considered to which Tynsong said, “We are examining not just a civil sub-division but also a district.”
