Shillong, Aug 28: Residents of Langkyrding and Nongmensong are facing significant difficulties due to delays in the construction of two crucial culverts along the road in the area. The contractors responsible for the project have been unable to continue work due to persistent water-logging issues, according to official sources.
An official source on Wednesday explained that the contractors are facing challenges in passing the foundation, particularly after completing work on one side of the culverts. The area is prone to flooding during heavy rainfall, complicating construction efforts.
When questioned about accusations regarding the contractors’ competence, the official defended the contractors, stating that the delays were weather-related and not due to any lack of skill or capability. “It would not be fair to label the contractors as incompetent. They have already commenced the work, and the delay is purely due to weather conditions,” the official said.
The source further explained that efforts have been made to alleviate some of the issues by removing debris with a JCB on one side of the collapsed culvert near BDW International School. This action has allowed water to flow, enabling vehicles to pass on the one functional side of the culvert. However, a complete reconstruction of the other side is necessary to restore full functionality to the road.
The officials have set a December deadline for the completion of both culverts, with directives issued to the contractors to resume work within the next ten days.
