Shillong, Aug 29: Opposition TMC leader Mukul Sangma on Thursday emphasised the need for policymakers to be more sensitive to the needs of the people and to take charge in guiding the bureaucracy, rather than being directed by them.
“…I think as policymakers, the leaders who belong to the political class, we need to understand the complexity of the problems,” said Sangma while speaking during a short duration discussion, raised by VPP president Ardent Basaiawmoit concerning the appointment of teachers, during the ongoing Autumn Session of Assembly.
Sangma criticised the tendency of bureaucrats to focus on their own profiles, stating that he has observed, over the years, how initiatives rooted in the sincere intent of politicians are often co-opted by bureaucrats, who then present the same as their own achievements to secure desirable postings in various ministries under the Government of India. “This is what bureaucracy is all about with no intent to offend them. This is the fact,” he said.
“Therefore, as policymakers we need to understand where we stand and we are supposed to be more sensitive toward the need of the people. Bureaucrats are supposed to implement what we tell them, not that they should tell us because we are the one who promise (to the public),” Sangma said.
Sangma also warned that tampering with the sanctity of recruitment processes could have long-term negative consequences.
He then called for corrective measures to be taken, cautioning that denial of these issues would only go on to further hinder the process of finding solutions.
