TURA, Sep 5: Garo Hills paid its respect to teachers on their special day — the 63rd Teachers’ Day — with functions held at various venues across the districts on Thursday.
In Tura, the celebration took place at the District Auditorium, where Executive Chairman of the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE), West Garo Hills, CP Marak, was the chief guest. Other dignitaries present included TR Laloo, Controller of Examinations, MBoSE, RTK Sangma, Joint Director of School Education and Literacy, Tura, Samuel Ch. Marak, Sub-Divisional School Education Officer, and ED Sangma, Sub-Divisional School Education Officer, Dadenggre. Officials from various departments, teacher awardees, principals, teachers, and students also attended the event.
Expressing his gratitude for being part of the celebration, CP Marak congratulated the teacher awardees and thanked all educators for their selfless service, dedication, and sacrifice.
He acknowledged their significant contribution in shaping individuals’ personalities and instilling values, discipline, and manners that transform them into responsible and productive citizens.
The State Awardees for West Garo Hills District were Subrata Sen, Assistant Teacher at Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Tura, and Miman M Sangma, Head Teacher at Balsrigittim LP School, Tura.
Meanwhile, the District Awardees for West Garo Hills included Reverend Fr. Biju Paul, Headmaster of Sacred Heart Deficit Secondary School, Dalu, Utpal Kr. Laha, Headmaster of Shyamnagar Government Upper Primary School, and Alithson G. Momin, Assistant Teacher at Ampanggre Government LP School under Secondary, Upper Primary, and Lower Primary levels, respectively.
The Best Scout Master award was given to Suraj D Marak, Scout Master from the Open Unit of Scouts Tura, and the Best Guide Captain award went to Benjish N Marak, Assistant Teacher and Guide Captain at Christian Girls Higher Secondary School, Tura.
In North Garo Hills, the celebration took place at the Mendipathar Multipurpose Hall in Resubelpara. The office of the DSEO, North Garo Hills, recognised teachers for their dedication by awarding the District Teachers Awards to Manoranjan Biswas, Ringrang Sangma, Glizer Marak, Scout Master Denam Marak, and Guide Captain Dimche Marak. The awards were presented by Deputy Speaker and local MLA Timothy D Shira, who served as the chief guest.
In his speech, Shira highlighted the leadership qualities of former President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, whose birthday is celebrated as Teachers’ Day. He commended teachers for their noble service and urged them to be innovative in their teaching methods. He also encouraged students to dream big and work hard to achieve success.
South West Garo Hills also celebrated the occasion with a grand function organised by the District School Education Officer at the Multi-Facility Centre in Ampati. Several educators were honored with District Awards for their exceptional contributions to education.
Awardees included Sanjib A. Sangma, Assistant Teacher at Boldamgre Deficit Secondary School, Grebingham B Sangma, Headmaster of Ampati Deficit U.P. School, and Jahan Miah, Headmaster of Kukurmua Government LP School. Victor Dorana T Sangma, Assistant Teacher and Scout & Guide Teacher at St. Dominic Savio Higher Secondary School, Garobadha, was recognized as the Best Scout Master, while Silje Ch. Momin, Assistant Teacher and Guide Captain at Birin Nuchong Secondary School, Ampati, received the Best Guide Captain award.
The event was graced by Sanjay A Sangma, MLA of Mahendraganj and Advisor to the Government of Meghalaya, who served as the chief guest. He congratulated the awardees and expressed deep gratitude to all the teachers for their selfless service in shaping the region’s future.
In his address, Sanjay A Sangma emphasised the pivotal role of teachers in shaping students’ character and futures. He underscored the government’s commitment to education, announcing significant strides made under Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma’s leadership. This includes the recruitment of an adequate number of teachers under Mission Education and the repair of 250 Government LP Schools in South West Garo Hills. He highlighted these initiatives as part of the government’s dedication to improving educational infrastructure and ensuring quality education for all.
The chief guest also praised the achievements of students from the region, many of whom have secured places at prestigious institutions like IIM and IIT. He encouraged students to emulate their teachers and set ambitious goals for their futures.
