SHILLONG, Sep 6: The Shillong Police have penalised 1,788 vehicles for using tinted glasses during a crackdown launched in July.
Apart from removing the black or dark films from the windows of these vehicles, the police realised a total fine of Rs 13.35 lakh by the first week of September.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Sylvester Nongtnger informed media persons that only ministers and MLAs are allowed to use tinted glass on their official vehicles. Others are prohibited from using tinted glasses on their vehicles because of a Supreme Court judgment disallowing any percentage of visual light transmission through the windscreen, rear glass and side glasses.
He said neither the MDCs nor the chairpersons of the corporations are allowed to use tinted classes.
The SP said only 30 of the 1,788 vehicles detected with tinted glasses had ML01 registration plates.
Meanwhile, the Shillong Traffic Police appealed to all vehicle owners to refrain from using the black films on the safety glasses, windscreens and side glasses of their vehicles.
It said the drive against the use of black films and other Motor Vehicles Act violations would continue.
Amid the crackdown, the state government constituted a committee to consider an exemption from the use of sunlight-blocking films on vehicle glasses. The members of this panel are the Principal Secretary, Home (Police), the Principal Secretary, Transport, the Secretary of Law and the DGP.
The Commissioner and Secretary of the Home Department are the convenors of this committee.
The police have also warned people using modified exhausts and are indulging in reckless riding and driving.
