SHILLONG, Sep 6: The NPP-led Executive Committee in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) is keen to move forward with the much-debated Khasi Inheritance of Property Bill, 2021.
KHADC Deputy Chief Executive Member Pynshngain N Syiem told reporters on Friday that the council had sent the bill to the Select Committee and the views of the stakeholders, including MDCs and prominent citizens, are now being sought.
“When we speak about inheritance, we cannot overlook the practice which has been there from time immemorial where a major chunk of ancestral property goes to the youngest daughter since she is responsible to look after the aged parents,” Syiem said.
He, however, said this does not mean the other children are denied to inherit ancestral property.
According to him, there are educated parents who have already declared through a will to avoid any problem and prevent any kind of exploitation.
“We need to properly look into the matter since it is an issue connected with our custom, culture and tradition. The rights of the youngest daughter should not be disturbed. Therefore, we cannot rush on such a sensitive issue,” Syiem said.
He said the council will have another session before the expiry of its present term and it will try to pass the inheritance bill then.
