Shillong, Sep 6: Action has been sought against overloading trucks carrying limestone through the Majai Land Custom Station to Bangladesh.
A group of youth of Hima Sohra led by social activist Wellborn Bynnud on Friday raised the issue with the Transport department.
After meeting the assistant commissioner of the department, Bynnud told reporters that this was not the first time they had raised the issue before the concerned authorities.
According to him, neither the Transport Department, PWD (Roads) nor officials of the Sohra Civil Sub Division have taken any steps to check on the overloading trucks.
He said they were informed that if only 12 metric tonnes of limestone is permitted, ‘How are the trucks allowed to carry beyond the permissible limit challan’, he questioned.
‘We have seen trucks carrying limestone above 24 metric tonnes,’ he added.
Bynnud further observed that the state is also losing huge revenue since these trucks are paying royalties or taxes only for 12 metric tonnes.
He said that somebody is benefitting from the overloading of trucks.
The social activist also alleged that the people manning the weighbridge are conniving with the limestone exporters for allowing the overloading trucks to ply.
He threatened that they would have to take drastic measures if the authorities failed to take action against the people at the weighbridge.
“Action should be initiated against the overloading trucks and people involved in the illegal activities,’ Bynnud asserted.
He further pointed out that the overloading vehicles have damaged important roads of Sohra and Tharia which connect Majai through the Umdud bridge.
According to him, the road connecting Lailad upto Umdud through Weijapuh Bridge is also damaged.
