SHILLONG, Sep 9: Meghalaya’s traditional Ryndia silk is closer to receiving a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, with a hearing scheduled soon. This was announced by Principal Secretary of Arts and Culture, and Textiles department, FR Kharkongor, during the inauguration of a mural on the wall of the Directorate of Sericulture and Weaving, Department of Textiles.
The mural, titled “Threads of Tradition,” is part of the Donate A Wall (DAW) initiative and pays tribute to Meghalaya’s rich textile heritage.
Created by artist Khatra (Siddharth Gohil), the artwork portrays a local artisan immersed in weaving, surrounded by intricate traditional motifs that reflect the region’s diverse communities and cultural legacy.
Kharkongor praised “St+art India” for their role in bringing this mural to life, marking their second CSR initiative in Shillong, following a previous project at the DC ofwfice.
Through “Threads of Tradition,” the mural aims to serve as a visual narrative of Meghalaya’s textile artistry, celebrating the artisans who keep these ancient practices alive.
