SHILLONG, Sep 10: The Voice of the People Party has slammed a section of the MLAs for accusing the four party legislators of misusing the discretionary grant of Rs 2.5 crore allocated to each of the 60 MLAs.
“Some MLAs have alleged that we swindled an amount of Rs 10 lakh which was earmarked under the discretionary grants,” VPP MLA from Mawlai, Brightstarwell Marbaniang said on Tuesday, while making it clear that the allegations were made even before the discretionary grants had reached them.
“I would just like to assure our critics that they should not worry since we will submit a detailed account of how the discretionary grants have been utilised,” he said.
The VPP MLA made it clear that the discretionary grant was not meant to help people with school fees, purchase of books or to clear medical bills.
He said the government has set up hospitals, PHCs, CHCs, and dispensaries to attend to their medical needs.
“People can come to us if they have complaints that doctors are not attending to their duties or they are not getting assistance in these health centres,” he stated.
He also advised people not to approach MLAs for school fees or books since there are schools set up by the government and it was the duty of the government to provide quality healthcare and education to the people.
