On this day, 137 years ago, a spiritual movement began that would leave an indelible mark on the Khasi Hills and beyond. September 18, 1887, marks the birth of Khasi Unitarianism, a faith that has grown to symbolise unity, tolerance, and the quest for truth.

Hajom Kissor Singh, a visionary, is credited with founding Khasi Unitarianism, which seeks to develop a spiritual path that is inclusive, rational, and rooted in love of humanity. Singh was born into a traditional Khasi family and was inspired by Christian teachings, but he sought a religious system that was more in line with Khasi culture. His search led him to Unitarianism, a faith that resonated with his values of freedom of thought, the importance of reason, and the belief in one God.

As the Unitarian Church celebrates the 137th Birth Anniversary of Khasi Unitarianism, it is not only a moment of commemoration but also a significant opportunity to reflect on the profound values that this faith embodies. Khasi Unitarianism, rooted in the principles of unity, tolerance, and the search for truth, offers a spiritual path that resonates deeply with the ideals of freedom, equality, and inclusivity.

At the heart of this movement lies the legacy of Hajom Kissor Singh, the visionary founder who, in 1887, planted the seeds of Unitarianism in the Khasi Hills. Singh’s vision was both revolutionary and compassionate. He sought to create a faith that was not confined by dogma but was instead open to the exploration of truth through reason, love, and a deep respect for individual conscience. His efforts were driven by a desire to build a spiritual community where every person, regardless of their background, was free to seek their own understanding of the divine. The growth of Khasi Unitarianism over the past 137 years is a testament to the enduring power of these ideals. What began as a small group of believers has blossomed into a vibrant movement, with congregations spread across Meghalaya and beyond. The Khasi Unitarian Church has become a pillar of the community, offering not only spiritual guidance but also fostering social harmony and mutual respect among its members and the broader society.

In today’s world, where religious intolerance and division often make headlines, the story of Khasi Unitarianism stands out as a beacon of hope and unity. It is a reminder that despite the many differences that exist among us—be they cultural, religious, or ideological—we share a common humanity that binds us together. Khasi Unitarianism teaches that it is possible to honor and celebrate these differences while still finding common ground in the fundamental principles of love, respect, and the pursuit of truth.

As we look to the future, the principles of Khasi Unitarianism offer valuable guidance. In a world that is increasingly polarized, the commitment to fostering an inclusive and compassionate community is more important than ever. The legacy of Khasi Unitarianism calls us to rise above our divisions, to embrace diversity, and to work together to build a world where justice and equality are not just ideals but lived realities. To carry forward the principles of Khasi Unitarianism is to strive for a world where every individual is valued, where freedom of thought and belief is upheld, and where our shared humanity is recognised as the foundation for a peaceful and just society.

This 137th Birth Anniversary is not just a celebration of the past but a call to action for the future—a future where the values of Khasi Unitarianism continue to inspire and guide us toward a more inclusive, compassionate, and just world. A momentous and joyous day for the Unitarian Churches in the Khasi-Jaintia and Karbi Hills! May the values it upholds continue to light the way for generations to come.
