SHILLONG, Sep 14: North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) Director Prof. Nalin Mehta on Friday emphasised the critical role nurses play in ensuring high-quality care while noting that achieving patient safety inherently ensures the safety of both doctors and nurses.
Prof. Mehta was addressing the State Level Continuation of Nursing Education (CNE) workshop on ‘Patient Safety’, organised by the NEIGRIHMS, which culminated on Friday.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Prof. Mehta praised the diverse turnout at the CNE and called on the healthcare community to continually strive for excellence in their care practices.
Urging nurses to ensure high-quality care, he remarked, “If patient safety is achieved, the safety of doctors and nurses gets ensured.”
Nursing Superintendent of NEIGRIHMS, Irene A. Nongtraw, on the other hand, elaborated on the theme of the workshop for 2024 ‘Improving Diagnosis for Patient Safety’.
She stressed the importance of correct and timely diagnosis in modern healthcare to ensure positive outcomes and enhanced patient safety, drawing attention to the ethical principles and responsibilities healthcare professionals must uphold.
Similarly, Medical Superintendent of NEIGRIHMS, Prof. C Daniala, highlighted cutting-edge technologies and methods to prevent errors and improve patient safety, particularly focusing on radiation safety and the need for precautions to avoid unnecessary exposure.
During the workshop, experts also led thought-provoking sessions on various topics, including surgical safety, effective communication, medication safety, infection control and incident reporting.
It may be mentioned that the workshop was attended by over 800 participants from across Meghalaya. It delved into critical areas of patient safety, providing comprehensive insights on improving healthcare quality and outcomes.
