SHILLONG, Sep 19: State BJP vice president and Tura MDC, Bernard N Marak, on Thursday announced that the 155th Garo Hills Day, which coincides with the anniversary of the ANVC and ANVC.B peace settlement, will be celebrated in his constituency.
“The 155th Garo Hills Day will be celebrated on September 24, 2024, in Tura. This is the same day that ANVC and ANVC.B sealed the settlement to strengthen the autonomous district councils (ADCs) in Meghalaya. The event was planned to coincide with the historical settlement date to revive the lost history of the Garos,” said Marak.
He further explained, “The Garo Hills Act of 1869 was assented to by the Governor General, which excluded the Garo Hills from the Zamindari system by establishing an independent district for the Garos. This was the day the Garos gained freedom from the Zamindari system and the Regular Regulations during British rule.”
Calling it a significant day for the Garo people, he said, “The Garos should celebrate this day with utmost joy and pride. As one of the signatories of the agreement to strengthen the ADCs, and as the elected BJP MDC of Tura, the celebration will take place in my constituency.”
