SHILLONG, Sep 24: The family members of the ten-year-old girl from Thangshalai village, who allegedly died by suicide after being denied a mobile phone, have been left in a state of utter shock, unable to comprehend the motive behind the girl’s action. She was a student of Class IV.
The deceased’s grandmother, Airolin Kharumnuid said the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when the girl asked her elder sister to give her the mobile phone.
Airolin said her sister told her to study first as she had to appear her examination. Following this, the girl immediately rushed to her bedroom and locked the door from inside.
The family has no clue about what happened later, Airolin said, while adding that after some time her cousin came to the house to call her to play outside.
When there was no response, the cousin peeped into the room from the window and noticed the victim hanging.
“We rushed inside the room immediately and cut the cloth to bring her down. But we failed to save her,” the grandmother said.
Secretary of Thangshalai village, Iohstar Kharumnuid said the entire village was in a state of shock.
“This incident is a lesson for parents that they should not give mobiles to their young children,” Kharumnuid said.
