SHILLONG, Sep 27: Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh has reassured the public about the safety of tourists in Meghalaya, dismissing concerns raised by certain elements over minor incidents from the recent past.
Speaking at a programme, which was organised to commemorate World Tourism Day here on Friday, Lyngdoh emphasised that Meghalaya is one of the safest states for visitors.
Maintaining that women tourists can freely walk in villages of Meghalaya without fear, Lyngdoh said some incidents were needlessly exaggerated in the digital era.
Revealing the state government’s plan to introduce “tourist buddies” at major sites across Meghalaya, Lyngdoh said they will provide guidance and support to tourists, enhancing both their experience and sense of security.
The tourism minister said that around 50 tourist buddies will be engaged within the next 2-3 months.
Referring to the ongoing dispute between tourist drivers from Assam and Meghalaya, the tourism minister downplayed its potential impact on tourism, stating that a committee has been formed to resolve the issue through mutual discussion.
He expressed confidence that the situation could be handled diplomatically.
On the occasion, several stakeholders, including Kiva Homestay, were conferred with the Indian Responsible Tourism State Awards for their contributions to the tourism sector.
