SHILLONG, Oct 4: The National People’s Party (NPP) on Friday asked the Voice of the People Party (VPP) to stop preaching and instead pursue the case of allegation of corruption against its president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit to its logical conclusion.
“Casting aspersions on people without fact is nothing but lying. This is done by liars of the highest order. We do not need to be lectured about the impeccable character by a person who supported the misappropriation of public funds in the district council,” said senior NPP leader and Rajya Sabha member Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi.
“If you do not have anything to hide, follow the case against the person, who brought this charge against your leader, to its logical conclusion,” Kharlukhi further stated.
Recently, former Umsning MDC Donkupar Sumer filed an FIR against Basaiawmoit for his alleged involvement in theft, cheating, forgery and criminal misappropriation of funds in the garb of acquiring a plot of land for the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
Kharlukhi said, “The beauty of democracy is that a person with a second class in masters tried to explain to the world that one of the toppers and rank holders of the university in two subjects, including law, is not fit to occupy the position of member of MPSC. What a shameless idea!”
“The people of Meghalaya had given us a mandate in 2018 and re-imposed their faith in us in 2023. You (VPP) will have to wait for years for your turn if it ever comes to you,” the NPP leader said.
VPP spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh had recently cast aspersions on the ability of the NPP-led MDA 2.0 government and the various recruitment boards in the state to conduct “error-free” and “controversy-free” examinations. He had suggested that it is paramount to appoint individuals with impeccable character and standing as chairperson/members of the MPSC.
In the FIR lodged with the Lumdiengjri police station, Sumer said, “…this is to state that Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit has committed theft, cheating, forgery and criminal misappropriation of funds while he was the chief executive member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and siphoned off public money in the garb of acquiring a land for the council.”
