SHILLONG, Oct 5: Acclaimed author Ankush Saikia is set to release his ninth novel, Rough Streets, as an e-book on October 11. Known for his gripping narratives, Saikia’s latest work takes readers to 1980s Shillong, a period marked by both beauty and unrest, seen through the eyes of schoolboy Chandan Sen.
Set against the backdrop of the Northeast, Rough Streets is a coming-of-age story that traces Chandan’s experiences with loyalty, love, and loss. The plot thickens as Chandan becomes entangled in a tragic mystery involving a local singer and a teacher, which reshapes his understanding of the world. As he transitions into adulthood, Chandan is forced to leave behind the small town and its complexities.
The novel, described by author Anjum Hasan as one that “brings Shillong of the 1980s uniquely alive,” promises to captivate readers with its detailed portrayal of that era. Director Atul Sabharwal also lauded the book as “a coming-of-age story that’s hard to put down.”
The cover design was created by Pankaj Thapa. Saikia, who has written ten previous books, including A Natural History of Violence, continues to explore themes of violence, identity, and the personal cost of uncovering hidden truths.
