Durga Puja, appears to be a festival of mirth and merriments only; and critics opine that Durga Puja is nothing but a waste of resources as it is less religious but more of a show of opulence. This may be partially true, but the actual significance of Durga puja is far more than that.
In ancient times when there was no particular religion, the learned sages, through their deep meditation and observations, introduced some rules and regulations to maintain an order in society so as to regulate a conduct for social life that is moralistic and proper. Prayer to the Almighty with piety was one of the rules; and that was the ‘Sanatan Dharma’ of India, which had no particular founder, jurisdiction or preaching. The basis of Sanatan Dharma was, ‘Vasudhaiba Kutumbakam’ The world is one family i.e global solidarity.
As devotion and dedication are the main spirit of worshipping God, at the same time expressing joy and moments of merriment are also a vital part of the festivals. Without joy, everything is colourless and dull! Making merry is the ultimate tonic of a healthy life and therefore this interplay of celebrations, pious spirits and jubilation go hand-in-hand. Amongst some of these arrangements, innovative decoration, illumination, and drum beating are integral parts that create an exhilarating vibe that requires time, effort as well as incurring expenditures to match the present sophisticated world!
Even though the primary essence of Durga puja lies in its religious sanctity and piety to attain blessings from the mighty goddess, but it is also true that pandals attract crowds not only for the spiritual but to immerse themselves in togetherness, hospitality, laughter, and celebrations that are observed collectively.
Puja is also noteworthy for its unique ability to congregate people together in cordial ties. This is special because it goes beyond one’s kith and kin and extends to those beyond community and religion too. After three days of praying to the goddess in grandeur, comes ‘Vijaydashami’ the ceremonial victory of good over evil, light over darkness and honesty over dishonesty; upholding the ethical value of forgive and forget. People embrace their friends and foes alike, leaving aside personal animosities, rivalries and misunderstandings of the past.
Durga Puja thus enables the society to re-invigorate itself with ties of renewed love and brotherhood. This great union plays a very significant role in the constructive rejuvenation of society. It is not confined to a particular religion or caste or creed only; but it welcomes all, irrespective of caste or creed, and aims at promoting universal brotherhood. i.e ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and that is the ultimate goal of Sarbojanin Durga Puja.
