Coach Birendra Thapa returns to Shillong Lajong

Shillong, Oct 19: Shillong Lajong FC has confirmed the return of Coach Birendra Thapa as the team’s Assistant Coach for the upcoming I-League season.
Thapa, a former Lajong player and coach, re-joins the club after successful coaching stints with Mohammedan SC and Sreenidi Deccan Football Club in the I-League.
Thapa’s previous tenure with Shillong Lajong as a coach spanned from 2013 to 2019, after which he moved to Mohammedan SC in 2019 and later joined Sreenidi Deccan in 2021. His return marks a reunion with a club where he has deep roots, both as a player and coach.
Expressing his excitement about rejoining Lajong, Thapa told The Shillong Times, “I had a great experience with Sreenidi Deccan FC, where we finished 3rd in the 2021-22 season and 2nd in both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. I’m thrilled to return to Lajong and help the team achieve its goals. We have a strong squad with a mix of talented young players and experienced seniors. It will also be great to work again with Coach Jose Hevia, with whom I’ve previously collaborated at Lajong and Mohammedan Sporting.”
With Thapa’s extensive experience and familiarity with the club, Lajong is optimistic about making a strong impression in the upcoming I-League season.Thapa’s return to Shillong Lajong FC brings a renewed sense of optimism as the club prepares for the challenges of the I-League season. With his wealth of experience and deep connection to the team, both as a player and a coach, Lajong is hopeful of making a significant impact under his guidance.
