JOWAI, Oct 20: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Jowai Unit celebrated academic excellence on Saturday by hosting the “2nd Mait Shaphrang Academic Award 2024” ceremony at Vianney Hall, Marian Hills, Jowai. The event honoured 30 students, both male and female, who excelled in their SSLC and HSSLC examinations, securing 80% or higher marks.
The chief guest of the ceremony was Pynkmenlang Sanmiet, education secretary of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of KSU. He was joined by Almo Syiem from the District School Education Officer’s (DSEO) office, Sunday Manner, Officer-in-Charge of Jowai Police Station, and Ewanmi Phawa, president of the KSU Jowai Unit, along with other union office-bearers and the students’ parents.
In his address, Sanmiet stressed the value of perseverance in achieving success. “Since 2013, no student from our state has reached the prestigious IAS rank,” he said, while urging the students to commit fully to their studies, both physically and spiritually, until they realise their goals.
Guest of honour, D Syngkon, offered three key pieces of advice to the students: improve their reading habits, expand their general knowledge, and stay informed about current events.
Sunday Manner, the Officer-in-Charge of Jowai Police Station, motivated the students to become “stars of the nation” and emphasised the importance of setting clear goals in life. He posed the question, “If others can achieve their dreams, why not you?” Manner also cautioned students to be wary of fraudulent activities on social media and highlighted the need for responsible mobile phone usage.
