Shillong, Oct 25: The NEHUSU and KSU NEHU unit on Friday closed the office of the university registrar, retired Colonel Omkar Singh and even chased him out from his chamber.
The student’s bodies want Vice Chancellor, Prabha Shankar Shukla to terminate service of Singh by accusing him that he is not fit and incompetent to hold the position of the university registrar.
Earlier in the day, the members of NEHUSU and NEHUTA had boycotted the 113 Academic Council (AC) meeting after the VC had refused to comply with their demand that he (Singh) should be asked to leave and not sit in the meeting.
While speaking to reporters after closing the office of the Registrar, NEHUSU president, Sandy Sohtun said that they are upset since the VC was adamant and was not ready to cooperate when they had requested that he should ask the Registrar to leave the meeting of the AC.
Sohtun argued that they would not like that the Registrar who is incompetent should attend the meeting in the capacity of a secretary of the AC and record the proceeding of the meeting.
According to him, even the members of the teaching faculties demanded from the VC that Singh should not be allowed to attend the meeting of the AC.
“”We finally decided to boycott the meeting as the VC was adamant and was not ready to ask the Registrar to vacate the meeting. We will not want any incompetent people to sit in the meeting of the apex body of the university,” NEHUSU president said.
Sohtun said that the student’s body will be writing to the Union Ministry of Education, Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma and other officials in Delhi to demand that the Registrar should be asked to step down.
Meanwhile, NEHUTA president, Lakhon Kma said that the NEHUTA is behind NEHUSU on this issue.
He said that they had told the VC that they are not aware who are the panel of members of the selection committee responsible for selecting Singh as the Registrar.
According to him, the VC is trying very hard to justify the appointment of an incompetent person to the position of the Registrar.
He accused that the VC and his close aides including the Registrar are here to destroy the name and image of the university.
