SHILLONG, Oct 27: The Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Drivers Association (MCTO&DA) has voiced strong resentment over an order issued by East Khasi Hills District Magistrate RM Kurbah, which prohibits the movement of heavily loaded vehicles on the Mawmaram-Nongthliew-Mawmih-Mawlyndep road.
According to the order, vehicles carrying loads over nine tons have caused damage to parts of the road and pose a threat to villagers and pedestrians due to the road’s narrow width.
MCTO&DA general secretary Peter Marbaniang stated that the association plans to meet the Deputy Commissioner (DC), as the order will significantly impact truck owners and drivers. Marbaniang noted that the DC did not consult with the truck association before issuing the order.
He questioned why trucks are still not allowed to use the Umiam bridge, despite the government spending large sums of money on its repair. “What is the point of spending several crores if restrictions still prevent trucks from using the bridge?” he asked.
The association president, Moskalander Marngar, echoed these concerns, adding that transportation costs will rise substantially if goods trucks are forced to use the Mawryngkneng route. “The government spent Rs 80 crore to repair the Mawmaram-Nongthliew-Mawmih-Mawlyndep road, yet it bars goods trucks from using it,” Marngar added.
The order has taken immediate effect and will remain in force until further notice. It also warns of penalties for violations under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.
