Tura, Nov 3: One of the noted and accomplished martial artists, who had a profound impact in the field that he loved to impart training on, died on Saturday in Tura. He was 69.
Marak, who retired as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) was a 5th Dan black belt in Taekwondo and continued to train youngsters through the years. He was a master coach in the sport that he had won a gold medal in. The gold medal came during a competition in Pokhara, Nepal, in 2016. He was also a recipient of the U Kiang Nangbah Award in 2019.
The much respected Marak, who was known across the region and loved by all, began his training in the year 1979 and rose through the ranks through his dedication to the sport of Taekwondo.
As if writing his own eulogy, Marak’s last statement, when he was possibly aware of his impending demise, went as such, “If I am long gone, tell all the students to wear taekwondo dress with one flower in their hands and visit my house” — a fitting note to an illustrious career.
