SHILLONG, Nov 4: Numerous projects undertaken under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS) in Meghalaya remain incomplete even after 22 years.
Tura MP Saleng Sangma, on Monday, reviewed the progress of MPLADS projects in his constituency with the Chief Secretary and other department officials. “I wonder why so many projects remain unfinished even after 22 years,” he said.
During the meeting, the Chief Secretary instructed all departments involved to ensure that all projects are completed by December.
Sangma highlighted one particularly troubling case — a college in Rongjeng remains incomplete, despite having already spent Rs 8.5 lakh out of an allocated Rs 10 lakh.
The Members of Parliament Local Area Development Division is responsible for implementing the MPLADS scheme. Under this scheme, each MP can recommend works costing up to Rs 5 crore per year in their constituency, to be managed by the District Collector. Rajya Sabha members can suggest projects across one or more districts within the state.
