SHILLONG, Nov 7: Cabinet Minister and UDP MLA from Khliehriat, Kyrmen Shylla has admitted that it is difficult to convince people to welcome the railway project in the state.
“Due to certain perception, it is not easy to convince people and this will take some time,” he said, adding that while some people are against railways, there are also some who are in support of it.
Earlier, the government was looking to hold consultations with people of Jaintia Hills over the idea of introducing railways there but no such move has taken place till now.
The government mulled the idea of introducing railways in Jaintia Hills after pressure groups in Khasi Hills rejected the idea over fears that it would lead to large-scale influx.
They are adamant that they will not allow railways until the government comes up with anti-influx mechanisms like ILP or MRSSA.
