NONGPOH, Nov 13: Fake currency worth Rs 6.87 lakh was seized from two individuals involved in the production and circulation of counterfeit currency on Wednesday after they were apprehended by the Special Task Force (STF) of Assam Police while attempting to distribute Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) in the Khanapara area.
According to police sources, the suspects, identified as Md Sahil Ali (21) from Karaibill, Bhaoria Bhitha in Chhaygaon, Kamrup district, Assam, and Harsh Wahlang (20) from Baridua, Ri-Bhoi district, fled towards Koinadhara upon spotting the police. They were travelling in a car with the registration number AS02F8100. The Assam police team pursued the suspects and intercepted them on the Koinadhara-APSC Road, within the jurisdiction of Dispur Police Station.
During the arrest and subsequent search, the police seized FICN amounting to approximately Rs 3.7 lakh in denomination of Rs 500, along with a mobile phone and the Maruti A-star vehicle used in the operation.
Based on Md Sahil Ali’s confession, a further search was conducted at his residence in 9th Mile, Baridua, Ri-Bhoi. This led to the recovery of an additional Rs 3.17 lakh in counterfeit Rs 500 notes, one FICN printing machine, a bundle of blank white paper cropped in the shape of Rs 500 notes, a bundle of white paper wrapped by brown tape, and another bundle of white printing papers.
Assam Police has detained both suspects under relevant legal provisions, and an investigation is under way to identify other accomplices involved in this illegal operation.
