MAWKYRWAT, Nov 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday virtually laid the foundation stone for the construction of an Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) in Domjyrti village under Mawkyrwat C&RD Block, South West Khasi Hills.
This initiative is part of the Centre’s efforts to enhance educational infrastructure for tribal communities nationwide.
During the virtual event, the prime minister inaugurated 10 Eklavya Model Residential Schools and laid the foundation for 25 others across the country, including the one in Domjyrti.
The ceremony in Mawkyrwat was attended via video conferencing at the Multipurpose Hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office.
During the programme, Tongkhar said that the construction site for the school has been finalised and the project has been awarded to contractor, MS Aloysius Arengh.
Construction has already commenced, with the approach road completed, and the school is expected to be operational within two years, he said.
Expressing his optimism, Tongkhar highlighted the growing presence of quality educational institutions in Mawkyrwat, including private and government initiatives.
“Once these institutions are completed, Mawkyrwat will emerge as a major educational hub in the state,” he said.
