‘Our diverse culture is our strength, not just an identity. Meghalaya is on the right track’

SHILLONG, Nov 22: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has promised that one lakh jobs will be created in the next five years.
Addressing a programme, which was held to mark the inauguration of the Polo Orchid Annexe, the chief minister informed that the tourism sector of Meghalaya has witnessed significant growth, with the economic size increasing from Rs 4.7 billion to Rs 6.5 billion in five years.
He also exuded confidence in the government’s commitment towards reaching USD 10 billion economy.
Highlighting the investments and job creation milestones, Conrad said an investment of Rs 2,000 crore has been made in the last three years, while Rs 4000 crore has been allocated for the next five years.
Emphasising the promotion of MICE tourism, Conrad said the state government is planning to hold various programmes in Sohra to boost tourism, leveraging its diverse culture as a strength and identity.
“Our diverse culture is our strength, not just an identity. Meghalaya is on the right track,” the chief minister said.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, who also was part of the programme, noted that tourism has been the key driver of growth in Sohra, particularly after the closure of the MCCL cement factory, which had previously impacted the local economy.
Lyngdoh highlighted the recent success of events such as Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival, which, he maintained, elevated Meghalaya’s global presence.
He also announced that Meghalaya will participate in promoting sustainable tourism in Gujarat next February.
Lyngdoh emphasised that Sohra should fully immerse visitors in the region’s unique culture, customs and cuisine through sustainable tourism practices.
Others who were part of the programme include Sohra MLA Gavin Mylliem, Director of Tourism Cyril VD Diengdoh, Sohra Sub Divisional Officer Saloni Verma, Mawsmai Sirdar Kenes Singh Khongwar, Polo Towers Group Chairman Kishan Tibrewalla, and local headmen.
