Shillong, Nov 27: The High Court of Meghalaya has asked the state to address the identified road sections “within a reasonable time” as part of its ongoing repairs.
Addressing concerns over the maintenance of the Mawphlang-Balat road, the HC passed the order in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Baniarap Snaitang.
In the PIL, the petitioner highlighted delays in repairing specific stretches of the road—namely, between Phlangwanbroi and Khliehriat, and from Pomblang to Laitumsaw—despite ongoing repair works by the state.
While acknowledging that the government has initiated improvements, the court emphasised the urgent need for attention to the aforementioned stretches.
The bench noted that PIL is an extraordinary remedy for cases of administrative inaction or failure that impact public interest.
It further stated that while courts generally refrain from interfering in routine governance, instances warranting judicial oversight, such as this, require timely intervention.
The court then asked the state to address the identified road sections “within a reasonable time” as part of its ongoing repairs, while asking the petitioner to remain patient.
