SHILLONG, Nov 29: In response to the rising number of theft cases in the state capital, the Meghalaya government has directed the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police and Superintendent of Police (City) to step up policing.
“I have given directions to both the SPs—SP East Khasi Hills and SP Shillong city—to enhance policing in the localities,” Home Minister Prestone Tynsong said.
Tynsong attributed the surge in thefts to the growing number of drug users in the area.
“These theft cases are happening because of the increasing number of drug users, who are indifferent to the time of day—whether it is morning, evening or night,” he explained.
Acknowledging the festive season, Tynsong emphasised the need for heightened security to ensure the safety of residents, whether at home or out in public.
“We are strengthening the policing, especially as it is a time of celebration and people are busy. We want to ensure it is safe for the residents inside or outside their homes,” the home minister added.
