If drugs are available across the state, it indicates that a cartel is operating. We cannot rule out the possibility of such cartels, which have established themselves elsewhere in the world, attempting to take root in this region due to vulnerability of the Northeast and its shared borders with neighbouring countries

SHILLONG, Dec 4: Opposition Leader Mukul Sangma has voiced deep concern over the growing drug menace and substance abuse problem in Meghalaya, calling it a serious issue made all the more challenging by the easy availability of narcotics in the state.
Sangma questioned the source of these substances and urged the government to investigate who might be facilitating their entry into the state. He also raised concerns about the possible involvement of individuals responsible for enforcing the law who may instead be enabling this illegal activity.
Highlighting the operations of drug cartels worldwide, he said, “If you look at how cartels operate globally, you’ll see how they have successfully influenced authorities. This gives us every reason to be vigilant and use all available resources to confront the problem head-on.”
Sangma further stated that the widespread availability of drugs in the state suggests the presence of an active cartel. “When you tackle these illegalities, you will face challenges. If drugs are available across the state, it indicates that a cartel is operating. We cannot rule out the possibility of such cartels, which have established themselves elsewhere in the world, attempting to take root in this region due to the vulnerability of the Northeast and its shared borders with neighbouring countries.”
When asked if the drug problem has worsened under the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, Sangma pointed to publicly available data and suggested that comparisons could be made to assess the situation.
He emphasised that the severity of the issue is evident to anyone who travels across the state and engages in discussions on the topic, underscoring the public’s growing concerns.
“It is, therefore, a serious matter,” he said, urging the creation of a “robust, vibrant, dedicated, and honest police force and associated authorities.” He stressed the need for personnel with integrity and dedication to address the crisis effectively.
