SHILLONG, Dec 8: The United Democratic Party (UDP), which is set to announce its candidate list by December 13, has finalised the names of four candidates for Shillong constituencies, as recommended by its district council circles.
The selected candidates are Desmond L Mawlong from Nongthymmai, Mitchel Wankhar from Laban-Mawprem, Auguster Jyrwa from Jaiaw and James Ban Basaiawmoit from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah.
“UDP Nongthymmai Circle has unanimously recommended youth leader and UDP Nongthymmai Circle Secretary Desmond L Mawlong to contest the MDC Election from Nongthymmai. He has been a committed youth leader of UDP who never shifted allegiance since day one,” said UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh.
“Another firebrand youth leader, former general secretary of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), ) Auguster Jyrwa has been selected to contest from West Shillong. Sitting MDC Mitchel Wankhar will contest from Laban while former MDC James Ban Basaiawmoit from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah constituency,” Mawthoh added.
Informing that the party has received several applications from different districts and constituencies, he said these applicants were recommended from circles to districts and subsequently to the State Election Committee (SEC). “The SEC will meet in a day or two, and the first list of candidates will be released on December 13 during the party’s general council meeting,” he said.
Mawtoh further clarified that the first list will include names that have been finalised through the due process, while additional names received later will feature in a second list.
Reiterating the UDP’s stance on alliances, Mawthoh informed that the UDP would ally only with the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) in the upcoming ADC elections and no other party.
