Shillong, Dec 8: Hosts Shillong Lajong FC delivered a resounding performance to thrash Rajasthan United FC 8-0 in their Round 4 clash of the I-League 2024-25 season at the SSA Stadium on Sunday. The emphatic victory marked the largest winning margin in the league so far this season, as Lajong left their opponents shell-shocked and without answers.
Lajong, who had been winless in their first three outings, came out with intent and urgency, setting the tone right from the start. The team’s hunger was evident as Figo Syndai opened the scoring in the third minute, latching onto a precise pass from Spanish midfielder Imanol Arana Sadaba. From there, the floodgates opened. Brazilian forward Douglas Tardin doubled the lead in the 17th minute with a clinical finish off a cross from the left. Just before the break, fellow Brazilian Daniel Goncalves struck from a corner in stoppage time (45+3’), giving Lajong a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.
Second-Half Goal Fest
The second half turned into an exhibition of attacking flair by Lajong, leaving Rajasthan United’s defence in tatters. Midfielder Damaitphang Lyngdoh struck in the 49th minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to make it 4-0. Just two minutes later, Tardin completed his brace with a sharp finish.
Not to be outdone, Marcos Rudwere, another Brazilian in Lajong’s arsenal, added his name to the scoresheet with a stunning effort in the 61st minute. The agony for Rajasthan continued as Arana Sadaba converted from the penalty spot in the 66th minute, following a handball in the box. Hardy Nongbri rounded off the scoring with a clinical strike in the 87th minute, sealing the rout.
Defensive Woes for Rajasthan United
Rajasthan United’s defence never found its rhythm and struggled throughout the match. The backline’s disorganization and lack of coordination were evident, allowing Lajong’s attackers too much time and space in crucial areas. By the second half, the visitors’ defensive shape had completely unraveled, turning the game into a one-sided affair.
The relentless dominance of the home side kept the partisan crowd entertained initially, but even the most loyal supporters appeared to lose some enthusiasm as the visitors offered no resistance.
Key Moments and Tactical Brilliance
The tone of the match was set early by Arana Sadaba, who operated effortlessly down the wings, troubling his markers with speed and skill. His early delivery into the box found Syndai, who slotted home to give Lajong a dream start. Tardin and Goncalves made the most of Rajasthan’s defensive lapses to pile on the misery before halftime.
The second-half blitz showcased Lajong’s attacking depth and versatility. From swift counter-attacks to set-piece precision, the team displayed a complete attacking performance, leaving the visitors chasing shadows.
Implications for the Teams
With this victory, Shillong Lajong FC now have five points from four matches, a much-needed boost for the team after a slow start to their campaign. For Rajasthan United, the defeat leaves them with just three points and serious questions about their defensive strategies and overall team cohesion.
Looking Ahead
Shillong Lajong will hope to build on this momentum as they eye a climb up the league standings.
