JOWAI, Dec 9: The Khooid Ya ka Wah Myntdu (KYM), an organisation committed to safeguarding the cleanliness of the Myntdu River, conducted an inspection on Monday to evaluate the water supply for Jowai town and its neighbouring villages.
The inspection—led by KYM president KL Pariat and accompanied by SDO PHE Electrical R Challam, Jowai headman and local elders—visited key water tanks across the town to ensure that the drinking water supplied to households remains safe and clean.
The inspection covered water tanks at several locations, including PWD Jowai, Dongmisngi, Lumkyndong, Molikso, Mynthong and Khimmusniang.
According to the KYM and Jowai headman, drinking water sourced from the Myntdu River and distributed through the PHE Electrical Department is currently clean and safe during the winter season.
However, concerns were raised regarding the water quality during the rainy season.
The group observed that during the monsoon, the Myntdu River becomes heavily polluted due to population growth in Jowai and its surrounding villages, as well as activities such as quarrying, road construction and improper waste disposal along the riverbanks.
These issues, the group said, significantly degrade the river’s water quality during the rainy months.
Assistant headman of Khimmusniang, JM Pohsngap, noted that the PHE supplies drinking water to Jowai from two sources, viz. Myntdu River and Umngot River. He suggested that, given its consistently cleaner state, the Umngot River could be utilised as an alternative water source during the rainy season to ensure a steady supply of safe drinking water.
The KYM and Jowai headman expressed their gratitude to the staff and leadership of the PHE Electrical Department in Jowai for their unwavering dedication to maintaining the town’s water supply. They also commended the department’s efforts to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the drinking water provided to residents.
