SHILLONG, Dec 9: In view of the huge crowd expected in Shillong city, the Directorate of School Education & Literacy has asked all schools within the municipal limits of shillong to be closed on Tuesday. The decision was also based on a request from the State Tourism Department.
\“In view of the request received from the Director of Tourism, Govt. of dated 9th December, 2024 pertaining to the large scale program to be held on 10th December, 2024 in Shillong and in view of the anticipated large influx of attendees which may result in significant traffic congestion and also keeping in view the traffic restrictions imposed within the city, it is hereby notified that all schools within the municipal limits of Shillong shall remain closed for the entire day on 10th December, 2024. All concerned heads of institutions are directed to ensure compliance,” read the order.
The In a decision that has left students, parents, and educators fuming, schools in Shillong will remain closed on Tuesday, December 10, to facilitate the much-awaited Bryan Adams concert at the city’s largest stadium. The move, justified by authorities as a “security and logistical measure,” has been criticised for prioritising entertainment over education.
While the legendary musician’s tour has ignited excitement across the city, many argue that the disruption sends the wrong message. Critics contend that such actions, especially during a critical academic period, undermine students’ focus and preparation for upcoming exams.
Although some schools have finished their exams, others were set to declare results on Tuesday, a plan now derailed by the closures. “This is not okay at all,” said the principal of a school affected by the sudden order. “The exams may be over, but academic routines matter. The students’ results will now have to be delayed, and we are unsure about how this impacts other schedules.”
Adding to the anxiety is the fact that students appearing for the SSLC examinations on February 10, 12, and 14 may face similar disruptions, as two more concerts are scheduled during that period. “Will the noise and traffic not disturb us? How do they expect us to focus with this chaos around?” asked the school principal who was visibly not okay with the decision.
Students have expressed their displeasure at what they see as the government’s disregard for their academic needs. “It’s like the government is telling us that concerts are more important than our future,” said another student preparing for her final examinations.
Another student added, “We love music, and it’s great to have concerts here. But why does it always have to disturb school or exams? The authorities could plan these events better.”
Social media has also been abuzz with criticism. Several netizens vented their anger, with one commenting “So Bryan Adams gets a day off for students. Can we get the same energy for fixing our roads or improving our schools?” Another commented, “Shillong wants to be a music hub, but what about being an education hub first?”
