In the last more than 50 years of statehood, there was not a single day when the Meghalaya Assembly did not function… Disruptions spoil everything, not just for us but for everyone in the country

SHILLONG, Dec 12: Rajya Sabha member Dr WR Kharlukhi on Thursday said democracy is more mature in the Meghalaya Assembly than in the Parliament.
“There are disruptions in the Parliament every day. First, it was about Adani-Prime Minister Narendra Modi and now, it is about Sonia-Swaraj (issue). I come from Meghalaya and I never expected such things to happen in the Parliament,” said Kharlukhi in the Parliament referring to continuous disruptions in both Houses.
“I may say that democracy is more mature in my state than here. In the last more than 50 years of statehood, there was not a single day when the Meghalaya Assembly did not function,” Kharlukhi, who is a leader of the National People’s Party (NPP), said.
He further said, “Instead of sending our MLAs for training in Parliament, the MPs should go to states like Meghalaya, Nagaland Mizoram and learn.”
Kharlukhi was annoyed that due to paucity of time and continuous disruptions, it is very difficult to raise issues in the Parliament.
“We are here to raise issues concerning our people. Disruptions spoil everything, not just for us but for everyone in the country,” he added.
The Winter Session of the Parliament, which commenced on November 25 and will continue till December 20, has been marred by disruptions in both Houses, necessitating adjournments.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Thursday rejected six notices to adjourn the scheduled business of the day and take up matters mentioned in the notices.
Earlier, Shillong MP Ricky AJ Syngkon of the Voice of the People Party had expressed disappointment over the continuous disruptions in the Parliament.
