SHILLONG, Dec 12: The National People’s Party (NPP) on Thursday said the Congress threat to pull out from the NPP-led Executive Committee in the KHADC would be futile as the polls are less than two months away.
“What difference will it (withdrawal) make now? The elections are in February,” former NPP president and Rajya Sabha member W.R. Kharlukhi said.
He said this while referring to reports suggesting that Congress is set to sever ties with the NPP in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.
Asked if there is a motive behind the Congress, Kharlukhi said: “Every move they make is always a political ploy. No political party will make a move if it is not politically motivated.”
Congress MLA Ronnie V Lyngdoh on Wednesday had said if the party decides to pull out of the NPP-led Executive Committee (EC) in the KHADC, its MDCs will abide by the party decision.
“We have to respect the feelings of party leaders and the party’s frontal organisations. As disciplined party members, we will abide by the party’s directive to end our relationship with the NPP in the KHADC,” Lyngdoh, who is also an MDC, told reporters. He disclosed that Congress discussed the matter for quite some time but had to wait as its leaders wanted to meet the officials of the Ministry of Home Affairs on the proposed amendment to the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
