JOWAI, Dec 13: After nearly two decades of delays, the long-awaited redevelopment of the Iawmusiang Market Complex in Jowai has officially commenced with Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Friday unveiling the foundation stone for the Rs 25.60 crore project.
The Iawmusiang Market, which serves as a vital economic hub for the region, will undergo reconstruction after revisions to its original estimate.
Initially sanctioned at Rs 26 crore, the final project cost was reduced to Rs 25.60 crore through the tendering process.
The contract has been awarded to Pyrkhat Hinge, with a completion timeline of 24 months.
The foundation-laying ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Jowai MLA Wailadmiki Shylla, MUDA Chairman, Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Thombor Shiwat, West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner BS Sohliya, government officials, vendors, village leaders and locals.
During the programme, the deputy chief minister highlighted the project’s significance for local market vendors, stressing its potential to enhance livelihoods and boost the local economy.
He commended the Jowai MLA for his persistent efforts in reviving the project and urged the contractor to ensure timely completion within the stipulated two-year period.
Meanwhile, Shylla described the ceremony as a “victory for all residents” and expressed optimism about the project’s timely completion.
He also mentioned additional infrastructure initiatives planned for the constituency.
On the same day, the deputy chief minister laid the foundation stones for various road projects, including Ialong, Jowai, Madur Thymme, Niriang and Mukhla roads, with a combined cost of Rs 50 crore. The foundation stone for the Annexure Building at the Circuit House in Jowai was also laid during the day.
