MAWKYRWAT, Dec 22: The Ranikor Block Congress Committee (RBCC) has decided to propose the name of Pherdonnam Rngaid, a youth from Nongnah, as the party’s candidate for the Langrin Constituency in the upcoming MDC elections to the KHADC, scheduled for February 2024.
According to Congress leaders, Pherdonnam is one of the most prominent youths in the Ranikor Constituency. He currently serves as the Manager of Nangkiew Irat Sports Club, one of the leading football teams in the Khasi Hills. The leaders also highlighted that he is a close associate of former Ranikor MLA, MM Danggo.
Speaking to the media, the president of the South West Khasi Hills District Congress Committee (SWKHDCC), Kynpham V Kharlyngdoh, confirmed that the RBCC reached this decision during a meeting held in Mawkyrwat on December 21.
Kharlyngdoh added that RBCC leaders resolved to intensify efforts by engaging with voters across the Langrin Constituency to secure a victory in the election.
Addressing the situation in Mawkyrwat constituency, where Congress lost its MDC, Carness Sohshang, to the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), Kharlyngdoh remarked that defections of MLAs, MDCs, and candidates between parties are commonplace. He expressed confidence that Sohshang’s departure would not significantly impact the Congress in Mawkyrwat.
He also emphasised that with Medal Sing Lyngdoh, who contested unsuccessfully in the last MLA election, joining Congress along with his supporters from the HSPDP, the party has regained its confidence. He noted that this development has raised hopes of reclaiming the Mawkyrwat seat.
Kharlyngdoh expressed optimism about winning both the Mawkyrwat and Langrin constituencies. He explained that voters’ perspectives have shifted due to the extension of the current MDCs’ term, giving Congress a strong chance to secure multiple seats in the KHADC.
