SHILLONG, Dec 24: Visually impaired Binestar Kharpor has shown anything is possible if one is determined and committed.
Binestar started his career as a computer instructor at the Bethany Society but it was difficult for him to impart training inclusively.
His limitations made him decide to turn into a street busker to make ends meet. He is often seen performing in Motphran, a busy commercial centre.
It was tough for Binestar to find a job after completing his higher secondary studies. “I started teaching computers without any formal training after class 12,” he said. He found out that he was unable to train people with hearing impairment as he could not communicate with them.
Binestar did have some formal music training, learning to play the guitar with the help of friends. “As a busker, I can support my wife and four children now,” he said.
He harbours a dream to pass competitive exams but he knows he can give back to society through his music by performing on the streets, although very few accept busking as a profession. He said that he is happy as he has managed to help his friends financially in times of need.
Binestar also dreams about building a house for the physically impaired as house owners are reluctant to let out their properties to people with disabilities.
“I know people offer help out of compassion and not out of respect for me,” he said.
