Govt announces seven-day state mourning

SHILLONG, Dec 27: Political leaders in Meghalaya, cutting across party lines, have condoled the demise of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh while fondly remembering his immense contribution towards development of the state.
The government has announced a seven-day state mourning till January 1, 2025 as a mark of respected for the departed leader.
During this period, the national flag will be flown at half mast where it is regularly flown and there will be no official entertainment during the period of state mourning.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma mourned the demise of the former Prime Minister and stated that his legacy as a distinguished economist, erudite scholar, and a leader who rose from humble beginnings will be remembered.
“Deeply saddened by the demise of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh ji. I recall his remarkable legacy as a distinguished economist, erudite scholar, and a leader who rose from humble beginnings. He will be remembered for his vast contributions towards the growth of modern India,” the chief minister posted on social media.
“On my own behalf and on behalf of the people of Meghalaya, I offer my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, admirers, and supporters. India will always cherish, remember, and take inspiration from his contributions. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he added.
Former minister and NPP leader, James PK Sangma posted, “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, a visionary leader and a renowned economist. His profound contributions towards our country’s economic reform and education will continue to inspire generations to come.”
Former chief minister and Leader of Opposition, Mukul Sangma said, “Farewell to one of the greatest leaders and one of my most revered leaders, Late Dr Manmohan Singh, who served the country in a number of capacities and as the Prime Minister, leaving behind a legacy of true humility, dedication, honesty and impeccable integrity in public life—rarest of the rare!”
“As we mourn his sad demise with the rest of the nation and the world pays tribute to this legend in public life, I find it difficult to hold my tears for all the goodness of this departed leader having been closely associated with him—oh, how he responded promptly to the important proposals of the state whenever placed before him for his consideration—how he treated state leaders with respect and honour; and truly, he served the people as true servant of the nation with utmost humility,” Mukul added.
“God has been kind to our Nation—giving a Finance Minister, equipped with knowledge and wisdom, who knew how to navigate the formidable challenges when country was in a financial crisis and who gave justice and delivered the poor, the oppressed and the victims of perversion of justice—MGNREGS to guarantee jobs to wage seekers; empowerment through RTI; enlightenment through Right To Education; opportunities for middle classes through economic reforms setting the trend of growth and prosperity which is responsible for bringing the nation thus far!”
Mukul recalled Manmohan Singh’s contributions towards the state through the developmental aspirations—the IIM; the NIT; the NIFT; the Undergraduate Medical Course (MBBS) and BSc Nursing in NEIGRIMS; Tura Government Medical College; the major road projects and many others which testifies his great empathy towards people of North East India in particular and the poor in general – oh wish we can have a PM like him again.”
MPCC president Vincent H Pala also condoled the former Prime Minister’s demise. “Deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh ji. A statesman, visionary, and humble leader who transformed India’s economy. Honoured to have served under him as MoS & Convener of the Party’s Special Committee. His legacy will inspire generations. Rest in peace, Sir,” Pala posted on X.
