SHILLONG, Jan 2: The state government has pledged to redouble its efforts in addressing public grievances and resolving longstanding issues in the new year.
“Under our Chief Minister’s leadership, we have made every possible effort, including passing resolutions, meeting the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, and aggressively pursuing matters with the Centre. However, the Centre’s response is beyond our control,” said NPP leader and Cabinet Minister Rakkam A Sangma.
Speaking about the Meghalaya-Assam border dispute, Sangma stated, “The government has completed one phase of the resolution process and is working on the next. However, Assam’s response remains a challenge. We provided the best possible solution in the first phase, but while some appreciated it, others turned it into an issue.”
Stating that in politics and governance, the MDA 2.0 government is giving its best, he said, “In politics and governance, we are doing our best. Although we receive little recognition, we have worked to the best of our abilities within our limits, regardless of criticism.”
For the new year, Sangma committed to intensifying efforts across sectors, including addressing pending issues such as Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the inclusion of Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
On the language inclusion issue, he remarked, “Stakeholders must also participate actively. Meeting the necessary criteria, such as the usage of the language and the publication of books, requires collective effort. We cannot expect the government to handle everything alone; public support is essential in this endeavour.”
