SHILLONG, Jan 2: Tura MP Saleng Sangma has emphasised the immediate need to identify and hold accountable those allowing overloaded trucks to ply in Garo Hills.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Sangma expressed concern that these trucks are not only damaging National Highway 62 but also endangering the lives of residents. He lamented the poor condition of NH-62, which has not been renovated, and highlighted that reckless driving by overloaded trucks has led to numerous fatalities.
Citing a recent accident in which a young girl lost her leg, Sangma criticised the state government for its lack of sincerity in addressing the plight of victims. He also pointed out that the Transport Department has failed to enforce rules, despite the Supreme Court’s directive that trucks should not carry loads exceeding 9 MT.
Speculating that there might be an agreement between Bhutan, Meghalaya and Bangladesh under which these trucks operate, Sangma suggested it would be more practical for such trucks to ply through West Bengal, given Meghalaya’s inadequate road infrastructure.
“Imagine if NH 62 deteriorates further; it will severely impact the state’s economy,” Sangma warned, maintaining that even there was an agreement in place, it did not justify overloading.
He called for a thorough investigation to identify and take action against those involved in these illegal activities.
