JOWAI, Jan 4: Rajya Sabha member, WR Kharlukhi, laid the foundation stone for the extension of the Mynthong Community Hall in Jowai—a project is estimated to cost Rs 1.90 crore— in the presence of Jowai MLA and MUDA Chairman Wailadmiki Shylla and the Dolloi of Jowai Elaka, Puramon Kynjing.
The event was presided over by Mynthong headman L Pohktai, who extended warm greetings to the Dolloi of Jowai Elaka, guests and the village residents, including women, men and youths.
It is pertinent to note that the original foundation for the Community Hall was laid in 1993. However, with the village’s population now exceeding 250 households, the need for a larger hall to accommodate community meetings has become evident.
To kick-start the much-needed project, financial assistance has been secured from various sources, including Rs 10 lakh from Dr Kharlukhi under the Rajya Sabha MP scheme, Rs 10 lakh from the JMB internal scheme, Rs 1 lakh from MDC Lakhon Dkhar and Rs 23 lakh from the Village Fund, totalling Rs 23 lakh for Phase 1.
This phase is expected to be completed by March 2025.
Addressing the gathering, the Jowai MLA lauded the hard work of the village leaders in making the project possible. Shylla also highlighted the importance of the Community Hall as a venue for meetings and social gatherings.
Kharlukhi, on the other hand, acknowledged the community’s support while emphasising that such development initiatives are possible because of the trust placed in him as their Rajya Sabha representative.
