SHILLONG, Jan 4: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), which has opted for a strategic approach in fielding candidates rather than contesting all seats, is banking on a significant number of wins from West Khasi Hills.
“Yes, we are fielding candidates strategically. We are expecting more seats from West Khasi Hills. Even in East Khasi Hills, we are hopeful, but the major chunk of our wins is anticipated from West Khasi Hills,” said HSPDP General Secretary Panbor Ryntathiang on Saturday.
When asked about the party’s overall expectations, Ryntathiang stated, “We are hoping for the best, but it’s too early to predict how many seats we will win.”
He also informed that the second list of candidates will be announced next week and noted that campaigning is in full swing. “Campaigning is ongoing, and all the candidates are working actively in their respective constituencies,” he added.
On the decision not to field candidates in all seats, Ryntathiang explained, “We are fielding candidates wherever we have strong grassroots workers. In areas where we lack this presence, it becomes challenging to set up candidates. Our focus is on constituencies where our grassroots presence is solid.”
When asked about the status of the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA), of which HSPDP is a part, Ryntathiang clarified, “The RDA is very much intact. We are united now and will remain so in the future. This should not be misunderstood.”
It may be recalled that both the United Democratic Party (UDP) and HSPDP had earlier decided to contest the upcoming KHADC and JHADC polls independently.
