Mawlai MDC resigns as KHADC EM, quits NPP

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG, Jan 6: After announcing his decision to contest the upcoming KHADC elections as an Independent candidate, Mawlai sitting MDC Teibor Pathaw has resigned as the Executive Member (EM) of the NPP-led Executive Committee in the KHADC. Pathaw submitted his resignation to Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pyniaid Sing Syiem in his office chamber on Monday.
Speaking to reporters after submitting his resignation, Pathaw stated that he had fulfilled his commitment to the people of his constituency by stepping down as EM. He reiterated that his decision to resign was in line with his plan to contest the upcoming KHADC elections as an independent candidate.
Pathaw also confirmed that he had resigned as a primary member of the NPP by submitting his resignation to the party’s state president, Prestone Tynsong. Additionally, he has stepped down as the president of the NPP Shillong City unit and relinquished all other positions he held within the state NPP.
It is worth noting that Pathaw’s decision to contest as an independent candidate poses a significant setback for the NPP ahead of the KHADC elections. His decision was finalised during a meeting convened by the Mawlai Social Service Organisation at Mawlai Nonglum last Saturday.

NPP legislator Sosthenes likely to contest polls from Jirang

From Our Correspondent

NONGPOH, Jan 6: Leaders of the NPP Jirang Block, including the NPYF Jirang and NPP Women’s Wing Jirang, convened at 13 Mer on Monday and resolved to field Sosthenes Sohtun, the sitting MLA of Jirang, as their candidate for the upcoming MDC elections. This decision follows the unprecedented resignation of the former MDC, Victor Rani, who recently joined the Congress party.
After Victor Rani’s defection to the Congress, three individuals had applied for the NPP ticket from the Jirang constituency — Kitborlang Khongiong, Albertus Lapang, and Balawan Syiemiong. However, despite multiple meetings to select a candidate, the leadership of the NPP Jirang Block was unable to reach a consensus.
This indecision ultimately led the leaders of the NPP Jirang Block to unanimously decide today to field local MLA Sosthenes Sohtun as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming MDC elections.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, spokesperson of the NPP Jirang Block, RU Kharbani, and president of the NPYF Jirang Block, Siewdor Syngkli, urged party workers to work tirelessly and appealed to the public to extend their overwhelming support to Sosthenes Sohtun in the MDC elections.
