SGH activist backs Christian consecration for state university

TURA, Jan 9: South Garo Hills-based social activist, Greneth M Sangma, on Thursday reacted to the recent statement made by the Khasi Jaintia Christian Leaders’ Forum (KJCLF), where they termed the government’s decision to hold a religious ceremony for the state university as a threat to secularism.
“As a concerned citizen of Meghalaya, I strongly disagree with the KJCLF’s stance on secularism. Meghalaya is a Christian-majority state, and it is only fitting that prayers be held before ceremonies, reflecting the state’s cultural and religious identity. This practice is not unique to Meghalaya, as many countries with a dominant religion have similar traditions,” he said.
Pointing out that secularism was not about eliminating religion from public life, but rather about separating religion from the state, Grenth said that the same was essential to ensure that all citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs, are treated equally and have equal access to public services.
“Instead of demanding secularism, the KJCLF Church Body should be advocating for prayers to be held before the ceremony, as is the norm in many Christian-majority contexts. This would not only respect the state’s cultural and religious identity but also promote inclusivity and diversity,” he added.
