TURA, Jan 10: A man aged around 55-60 years from the village of Dainadubi in North Garo Hills was arrested for allegedly attempting to sexually assault a minor.
The incident allegedly took place on the intervening night of December 27-28 last year but a case was filed only on Wednesday.
The accused was arrested after attempts were allegedly made by villagers to arrive at a compromise. No case had been registered earlier but once information was provided to the District Child Protection Officer of North Garo Hills and the police, a case was immediately taken up and the accused was arrested.
Earlier, two organisations had issued a condemnation against the accused with the DCPO and sought action against him.
As per information received, the accused had lured the girl before tying her hands and feet and then attempting to sexually assault her. He also allegedly touched her private parts.
A case of molestation under the POCSO Act has been registered against the accused.
“A case has been registered and the accused has been arrested. It seems there was an attempt to hide the case through a compromise but once we were informed, we booked the culprit under relevant sections of the law,” Superintendent of Police, Swapnil Pawar said on Friday.
