NONGPOH, Jan 10: The Central Silk Board (CSB), Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organisation (MESSO), Guwahati, conducted an awareness programme on the Central Seed Act for the P-3 Unit, Nongpoh, at the Training Hall, Mawdiangum, Nongpoh, Ri-Bhoi District, on Friday.
The event saw the participation of 130 farmers and stakeholders from the Muga and Eri seed sector in Ri-Bhoi district.
The programme was chaired by Dr. NK Bhatia, Director of CSB, MESSO, Guwahati, as the chief guest. Senior scientists, including Dr. BN Sarkar, Dr. Mahananda Chutia and Dr. Lopamudra Guha from CSB, MESSO, Guwahati, along with RB Lyngwa, District Sericulture Officer, and staff from the Sericulture Department, were also present on the occasion.
Abhishek Singh, Scientist-C and In-charge of MESSO, P-3 Unit, Nongpoh, in his address, underlined the importance of the Seed Act in maintaining quality standards in silkworm seed and cocoon production.
On the other hand, in his keynote address, Dr. NK Bhatia explained the provisions, rules and regulations of the Seed Act, highlighting its role in improving sericulture quality. He covered essential topics such as the structure of implementing authorities, registration processes for silkworm seed producers and chawki rearers, and conditions for seed cocoon production.
Dr. Mahananda Chutia, Nodal Officer for the Central Seed Act, encouraged participants to register under the Act to ensure adherence to quality standards and take advantage of the formal registration process available on the web portal.
The programme concluded with an interactive session where farmers discussed the rules, registration process, and compliance requirements under the Act.
