SHILLONG, Jan 10: Ahead of the upcoming MDC elections, National People’s Party (NPP) leader and Cabinet Minister Rakkam Sangma has appealed to voters to elect political parties capable of effectively managing the finances and resources of the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs).
Sangma highlighted the importance of preserving the Sixth Schedule while addressing the financial challenges faced by the ADCs like the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) and the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), particularly their struggles with revenue deficits and delayed salaries.
Commending the leadership of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) for demonstrating effective governance, Sangma said KHADC’s ability to forge strong connections with both the state and central governments has been instrumental in securing necessary resources. Sangma also cautioned that ADCs, governed by opposition parties, might face significant financial constraints.
Responding to the reports of some NPP MDCs choosing not to contest elections under the party’s banner, Sangma acknowledged that anti-incumbency is a challenge faced by all political parties.
Noting that similar trends have been observed among Congress MDCs, he attributed such decisions to individual preferences that often arise during elections.
